The weakness of this biography is while Everitt might be aiming at a form of historical rehabilitation, I’m not sure Cicero was ever really in need of rehabilitation.

I could recommend the book for anyone interested in Cicero or the Roman Republic during his lifetime. Thanks in large part to his lifelong correspondence with his close friend, Atticus, we are given a depiction of Cicero that shows him as at times as dedicated, brave, vain, insecure, deeply committed to his family and to the ideals of the Republic.
