Or you’ll run for the library for a title you cannot believe you’ve missed. Harold Bloom really is a cantankerous old thing, so hard to please and yet so seemingly pleased with himself. They all loved canonical literature just as much as Harold Bloom, I venture to say. I’ll give one or two examples. He’s just that convincing. That’s much better, Occidentae think. But god forbid that a white European male should identify with a character that doesn’t share his oh so important and special identity. He takes the work at hand and draws a theory of human nature and of human social life from it. But like the canon, I think this is a book that will reward a re-reading.

I would think that, occidnetale all the books that are in this first list, once the reader is conversant with the Bible, Homer, Plato, the Athenian dramatists, and Virgil, the crucial work is the Koran Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Bloom, conversely, declares, “We owe to Shakespeare not only our representation of cognition but much of our capacity for cognition. He’s just a man who thinks a book is more important than its author. But I have neither excluded nor included on the basis of cultural politics of any kind.

Psychology and sociology are soft sciences, but they not really an art and should not be classified as such. Some of Bloom opinions on the books he discusses are questionable, and I’m never fully convinced by his claims that Shakespeare is THE greatest writer, but I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He also has the bad habit of arguing from authority rather than with reasons.
Insight, appreciation, a bit of knowledge. Any book that fought this trend would have my approval, but Bloom is always a scintillating writer, making The Western Canon a healthy and necessary book for our climate.
The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages
There is something incantatory about it. Hxrold a more “literary” note, I just don’t agree with his basic statement that Shakespeare is the origin and personification of Western literature.
It should include pieces that are from marginalized groups. Oh, and he also hates Harry Potter and popular culture in general. However, Bloom makes a compelling case for all of the central arguments of the book: I don’t consider it at all a stretch to place Shakespeare as the greatest writer in the English language, and it isn’t even entirely unreasonable to place him as the greatest writer in any language, or at the very least the greatest playwright.
