What I loved in Kourouma’s first novel is the well-woven evocation, from inside the heads of the two characters, of the broad and complex transformations happening upon independence in West Africa more precisely Ivory Coast I assume. But they cut him short. It is a little regrettable that we do not have more parts following Soulimata after the first few, but Kourouma has more than just his characters’ story to tell.

Kourouma makes bold use of color and physical attributes in his descriptions, and uses numerous references from the animal kingdom to make the tale seem almost fable-like.
